Gears of War, the story so far Part 1

The battle between mankind and the Locusts is comming to ahead, Marcus Fenix our hero is leading delta squad just after the sinking of jacinto. Lets recap whats happened so far…

Before Gears of War (Backstory) – Emergence Day

The game is set on Sera, a planet inhabited by humans, who have fought over a fluid known as “Imulsion” (very similar to oil like on our planet). Over several decades, humans fought each other for control of this resource in what became known as the Pendulum Wars. These wars ended when the Coalition of Ordered Governments (COG) took control of the planet. However these wars were nothing compared to the emerging threat that culminated on “Emergence Day”. On this day a ravenous bunch known as the Locust Horde bursts from underneath major human cities using a network of underground tunnels. The human force stood no chance against this surprise attack with the horde overrunning Sera’s population on that single day (Emergence Day).

With humanity’s forces decimated and unable to defend against the sudden attack, the COG orders any survivors to Jacinto Plateau, a safe haven from Locust underground attacks. When whatever was left of humanity is safe in Jacinto the COG uses orbital laser weapons in a scorched earth strategy to deny the Locust Horde its gains. The human survivors that could not make it become known as the “Stranded” and have to survive on their own.

Gears of War

It is 14 years since “Emergence Day”, the Locust continues to attack Jacinto, with dwindling numbers the COG is forced to turn to anyone able to carry a weapon. The game begins as Marcus Fenix the main character of our game and a COG soldier imprisoned for abandoning his post to attempt to rescue his father (a back story that hopefully will be completed in Gears of War 3, I hope). He is freed by his friend Dominic Santiago after receiving a pardon, but there’s no time for chit chat as you’re told to suit up and get ready to fight your way out of the prison.

Once you and Dominic have fought your way out of the prison he takes you to meet Delta Squad. It’s comprised of a few colourful characters by the names of Baird (the tech head of the group) and Cole Train (a famous athlete that signed up when all hell broke loose). The group is led by a lieutenant Kim. When Marcus and Dominic join this group they are searching for a device called “resonator”, this device will map the Locust Tunnels and in turn shed some light on the where the majority of the locusts are hiding. This in turn will allow the COG forces to deploy the “Lightmass Bomb” in an attempt to destroy the locust threat once and for all. Fenix and his allies recover the device, but suffer multiple casualties in the process, most notably lieutenant Kim, see the video below.

Amidst the chaos Delta squad manage to escape the grip of general RAAM with Fenix becoming the new leader of Delta squad. He leads the squad through the ruins of Sera, to a mining facility; from there they head to a pumping station where the resonator is to be detonated. Delta Squad succeeds in detonating the resonator, but only to shortly discover that the device failed to map the entire tunnel network. Fortunately, they discover a near complete map of the network that originates from Fenix’s old home, specifically his father’s laboratory. The video explaining this part of the story can be seen below (apologies for the quality)

The group pissed off that their mission isn’t yet over ventures to the Fenix estate at East Barricade Academy, there they encounter the usual heavy Locust resistance. The data is collected, revealing that the Locust Tunnels that run throughout the entire planet’s crust and are much larger than anyone ever expected. By obtaining this information the group with the aid of control manage to pinpoint the best location to detonate the light mass bomb.

Delta squad boards a train carrying the light mass Bomb, Marcus and Santiago battle their way through the train, however before they could detonate the bomb they run up against General RAAM. This time there is no hiding; Dominic and Marcus have to do battle with this overlord before they can upload the coordinates for the light mass bomb. After a difficult battle General RAAM is finally defeated and Marcus activates the bomb while Santiago escapes onto a helicopter, after a few suspenseful seconds where you think you’re going to go with the ship, Marcus leaps toward the helicopter to be caught by Colonel Hoffman. He pulls Marcus onboard after the Bomb is activated. Fully activated, the Lightmass Bomb launches into Sera’s underground, and eradicates the Locust tunnel networks. In the game’s final sequence, Hoffman delivers a victory speech as the tunnels collapse and explodes, while another haunting voice promises that the Locust will keep on fighting.

Stay tuned for part 2 of our story….
